What is the lifespan of a building from Chiltern Garden Buildings?
Your building will last for many years to come, with minimum aftercare and maintenance.
What can I do to prevent wear and tear on the building?
Every three years or so, your building will benefit from some timber maintenance. Chiltern Garden Buildings offer a full refurbishment service, however, read these self-care tips below so you can protect and look after your building for years to come. The three main steps include preparation, sanding, and treatment.
Step 1 - Preparation
Firstly, remove the canvases, cushions, and furniture from the buildings. The canvases and cushions will need to be stored away from the buildings to allow time for the treatment to dry. Remove as much debris and dirt as possible from the timber and be sure to clean in between the floorboards.
Step 2 - Sanding
Lightly sand the entire structure including the rafters and ring beam, post, handrails, and floorboards. This is also a good time to try and shift any stains caused by wine etc. Ensure all sawdust is removed and ensure the timber is clean and dry.
Step 3 - Treatment
We use a golden-brown wood preserver treatment on our own buildings. We would advise that you pay attention to the main structure, curved bench seating, and tables. These areas should all be given an extra coat of stain treatment for added protection.
Can I change my thatch roof to a Cedar Shingle roof?
Yes, we offer a service to replace your thatch roof with a new Cedar Shingle roof. To change your roof from thatch to Cedar, we build a new roof which replaces the original roof. Please contact us here with your building dimensions and to discuss further.
We specialise in re-thatching and refurbishing gazebos and garden buildings by the following manufacturers:
Beach Hut Leisure
The Lapa Company
With our expertise and knowledge, we can give new life to your pre-existing structure. No matter the condition of your gazebo or garden building, our specialised services will refurbish the building back to its original standard only using the highest quality materials.
How often do you rethatch your roof?
On average, you will need to re-thatch your garden building roof every 6 to 8 years. This ensures the roof remains a high quality and is in good condition. The thatch we use will need more care and attention than traditional thatch used on houses. Chiltern Garden Buildings use South African reed, which is harvested and manufactured into a tile.
How long will my thatched roof last for?
Unlike traditional thatch, your garden building roof thatch will last for 5- 8 years. There can be some cases where thatch will not need to be replaced after 5 – 8 years, however, it is always worth checking after 5 years have passed. If you are unsure if your thatch needs replacing and need advice, feel free to give us a call.
How long will a full re-thatch take to do?
Chiltern Garden Buildings will usually complete a re-thatch within half a day.
How far do you travel for rethatching/building installations?
Rethatch work or building installation is included in the price within a 100-mile radius of Oxford.
What are the canvases made from?
The canvases are made from 12-ounce Regentex cotton which is both flame- retardant and waterproof.
How do I keep my canvas clean?
To remove any stains, use warm soapy water and a clean cloth and rinse with clean water afterward. Stains from products containing oil and grease should be removed with a spirit-based solution.
How do I look after my cushions?
Wipe frequently with a damp cloth to maintain the appearance of the fabric. Spillages should be removed immediately with a clean absorbent cloth. Most stains can be removed using cold/warm water and a clean microfibre cloth. Stains from products containing oil and grease should be treated with a spirit-based solution. If soap-based cleaners are used, all soap residues must be rinsed from the fabric.
What accessories are available?
We offer a wide-ranging variety of accessories at an extra cost. For more information, see our accessories page here.
Accessories we offer include:
Can I choose more than 1 colour for my canvas or cushions?
Yes, the standard colour for our canvases is dark sand or olive green. Our luxury cushions fabrics are available from a choice of 30 colour options.
What is the delivery and installation lead time?
Do we need planning consent for the building?
Planning permission is not required for our buildings, as they are free-standing and not classed as a fixed structure. If you live in a conservation area you should check with your local planning office.
Do we need to lay down a base?
The building can be sited on an existing paved area or decking, provided it is in good all-round order. For new bases, a 4-inch concrete slab is required.
